How to Make Your Apartment Feel and Look More Spacious

Making the most of a smaller space is a challenge for many apartment tenants. Obviously, apartments just don’t have the space of most houses, and depending on their size, can feel cramped. While our Kamloops apartment rentals were designed to use space efficiently, the following tips will make your suite feel more spacious.

Use Smaller Furniture and Furnishing

Large or heavy, chunky furniture and furnishings can make a room feel cramped. By choosing apartment-scale pieces like compact sofas, smaller coffee tables and end tables, your space will be functional while  feeling larger.

Keep Some Furniture Away from Walls

Pushing all of your living room furniture against walls may seem like a good way to create more space, but it doesn’t make the room functional. Below is one idea for creating more inviting conversation areas in the living room and demarcating the end of the living area with a small dining table. Small occasional chairs at the dining table could perform double-duty as living room chairs when you have more guests.

Use Furniture with Legs

Furniture that is raised off the floor with legs makes a room feel less heaving and lets light pass through. Sofas, living room chairs and coffee tables with legs make a space feel more open.

Use Rugs to Create Areas Within Your Space

Area rugs can create distinct spaces in your apartment – especially in an open plan. They give a room functional structure. Place a small rug in each seating area: one for the couch, one for a chair and coffee table, and one for the dining area (as in the drawing above).

Lean a Large Floor Mirror Against a Wall

Mirrors create an illusion of depth and reflect light. A large mirror leaned against a wall works well in a rental apartment because they really reflect your space while also being more landlord friendly than heavy wall mirrors.

Choose Light Colours

While you may not be able to paint your apartment (check with your landlord), light coloured furniture and furnishing make a space feel brighter and more open by reflecting light.

Buy Multiuse Furnishings

Small, multi-functional storage ottomans and coffee tables save space by eliminating the need to buy more furnishings while also hiding clutter.

Go Vertical with Tall, Narrow Shelving

Take advantage of vertical space with tall, narrow shelving and a tall bookcase with open shelves and drawers. Vertical shelving gives you places for books, knick-knacks, plants and more while saving floor space.

Declutter

Keeping your living room and kitchen clean and free of clutter is an easy way to make an apartment feel larger than it is. Keep belongings you don’t often use in your apartment building’s personal storage, or rent a storage unit from a local business, like Valleyview Mini Storage.
